For Students

Kerry James Marshall experience

We are nearing the end of the Kerry James Marshall experience and will begin putting together graphic narratives inspired by the experience. So far, what are some of your ideas? Are you beginning to carve out the characters and storylines? How is this experience going so far? Are you making connections and discovering new ideas for approaching your narratives? On this site, be sure to check out Shakespeare's Othello and Macbeth as graphic narratives.

Would love to hear from you! Click on the green comment link below and join the discussion.

You make a good point. As we look to communicate our ideas; there are many tools we can use. The idea of using different forms of media to communicate a message opens up so many more paths--both text-based and visually--this is good practice for pushing the boundaries of your writing.

As you consider what visual imagery your writing will convey, you can begin thinking about how to create that same visual imagery using just words. A fun exercise may be to go back and forth either on paper or in your head. It's all good practice for strenthening your writing.

I wonder if you all are writing first or creating the images first? Maybe a little of both? Which do you prefer? Let me know.

I personally thought the experience was one that you would want to have and I liked how he involved different cultures. It was really interesting to see the puppets. I think that if we would have had more time to view the exhibition part of the visit it would have enhanced our experience. Overall I thought it was interesting. MP New Albany.

I agree, I do wish we had much more time in the galleries. It is important to have more time to look and think. I wish we could have stayed in the galleries a bit longer. However, due to the nature of the visit, we have to fit so much into a small amount of time. It's tricky! :)

Something to note is the Wexner Center is free to the public and open Tues.-Sun. so you can come back and visit us anytime. Visit the website www.wexarts.org for more info.

On another note, I'm glad you were inspired by the myriad cultural influences Kerry James Marshall used in this work. Do you think that your own Pages project will pull from multiple cultural influences? Do you think you might deal with identity or cultural issues in your own work? Let me know what you're thinking. --Dionne
